A drone from the Chinese technology company DJI, designed to make deliveries, broke the altitude record last April with a delivery made on Mount Everest. With the collaboration of a Nepalese company, he managed to transport three oxygen cylinders and a kilo and a half of supplies.

As reported by the technology company, the journey began at the base camp on the mountain, until reaching level number 1, where the cargo was delivered. On the way back, the trip was used for the drone to transport garbage.

The drone crossed an icefall

The route taken by the unmanned aerial vehicle presented several difficulties, as DJI has stated. In one of the phases, he had to cross the icefall that separates the two camps.

The role of this type of aircraft “has the potential to revolutionise the logistics of climbing Everest”, according to the director of corporate strategy Christina Zhang, both in cleaning the mountain and in the safety of the people involved in the climbing process.

The Chinese company leads the sector of drones for agricultural and forestry uses, together with another local company. However, the manufacturers of these devices are now looking for new applications.

While drones dedicated to delivery still account for only 8% of demand in China, the number of these aircraft has grown rapidly in recent years, totaling more than 25,000 units in 2022 alone, according to data collected by a report by China Securities.
