This past Monday Apple held its annual developer conference, a WWDC 2024 in which the American giant announced its own AI called Apple Intelligence, which includes a series of Artificial Intelligence functionalities that will arrive on iPhones, iPads and Macs very soon.
One of the most outstanding novelties of Apple’s AI is, without a doubt, the integration of ChatGPT in Siri and, in this sense, we have just learned that this is free for Apple, since, according to a rumor, the Cupertino-based firm pays OpenAI absolutely nothing to use its chatbot in Siri.
Apple is free to use ChatGPT in iOS 18
A recent report published in Bloomberg assures that the company led by Tim Cook does not pay OpenAI anything to allow Siri to access ChatGPT-4o in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.
“Apple is not paying OpenAI as part of the partnership,” said the people, who asked not to be identified because the terms of the deal are private. Instead, Apple believes that pushing OpenAI’s brand and technology to hundreds of millions of its devices has equal or greater value than monetary payments, these people said.
Despite the fact that Apple does not pay OpenAI anything to use its chatbot in Siri, Gurman says that Sam Altman’s company can benefit from this agreement, since the integration of ChatGPT-4 into the personal assistant of iPhones may encourage users to sign up for ChatGPT Plus, the paid plan for the AI chatbot that costs about $20 per month. In addition, if they contract the premium version of ChatGPT from an Apple device, it could also receive a commission for this management.
This is undoubtedly a very profitable deal for Apple, as in addition to paying OpenAI nothing, it also hopes to increase profits from AI through revenue-sharing agreements with its partners. In this regard, Gurman says that Apple is negotiating with Google to offer the big G’s AI chatbot, Gemini, within Siri as an alternative to ChatGPT and everything seems to indicate that this agreement could be signed later this year.
