Apple has announced a significant strategic shift in its production, by deciding to assemble the Pro and Pro Max models of the upcoming iPhone 16 in India. In the past, there have already been indications that production was going to move to the Asian subcontinent, with reports that Tata will be in charge of manufacturing the first units of the Indian iPhones.

The move, made in collaboration with partner Foxconn, marks the first time the popular Pro models will be produced outside of China as part of Apple’s plan to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on China. Although the initial production of the iPhone 16 Pro will begin in Chinese territory, India is expected to start producing these devices in future waves.

A continuation of what we saw last year

This move, as reported by 9to5Mac follows the production of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus in India last year, although the Pro models were assembled elsewhere. Supply chain diversification has been a long-term strategy for Apple, and it is not only looking to reduce dependence on a single country, but also to mitigate associated risks, such as COVID-19 production shutdowns in China.

Foxconn, Apple’s main manufacturing partner, will play a crucial role in this expansion in India. The company has invested heavily in production infrastructure in India, strengthening assembly capacity in the country. This effort also reflects India’s growing importance as a global tech manufacturing hub.

Despite this change, most iPhone 16 production will continue to be done in China. However, this diversification not only offers Apple greater flexibility and bargaining power with the Chinese government, but also protects its supply chain from future disruptions.

The move of part of production to India also responds to geopolitical and trade tensions between the United States and China, which have led many technology companies to look for alternatives to minimize risk. By diversifying its production, Apple can ensure that its business continues to operate without significant disruptions, even amid international conflicts.

Moreover, this decision could also have a positive impact on the Indian economy, creating jobs and strengthening the country’s position as a major player in the global tech industry. The local production of high-end devices like the iPhone 16 Pro underscores the growth and ability of the Indian manufacturing industry to handle high-tech products.
