Transferring data between Google Photos and Apple Photos is easier than ever

Google Photos or iCloud Photos? That is the question. The answer will vary depending on the person, but now, transferring all our photos from Google Photos to iCloud is easier than ever. It will only take five clicks for the system to take care of the entire process of migrating our library.

This has been made possible by a collaboration between Apple and Google that makes transferring photos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos easier than ever and no download is required during the process. This way, any user of Google’s platform will be able to switch to Apple’s easily.

A collaboration between Apple and Google that will make our lives much easier

This new functionality is the result of the collaboration between Apple and Google under the Data Transfer Project, an initiative that seeks to facilitate the transfer of data between online services. This collaboration makes the process of managing our photos easier and complements the possibility of transferring photos from iCloud to Google, which has existed since 2021.

The new photo transfer process is available in more than 240 countries, with restrictions on child accounts or those Apple accounts that are managed. In addition, another restriction, in this case temporary, is that users have to disable iCloud Advanced Data Protection. The new process works as follows:

  1. We will access Google Takeout, the platform that allows you to export data from the services offered by Google. From this platform, we will have to start exporting the photos and videos that we have in Google Photos.
  2. We start exporting all the data by noting that we are only doing it with Google Photos and not with the other services of our Google account.
  3. We choose iCloud as our destination when the system asks us where we want to export our photos and videos. Specifically, the option to choose will be “Apple – iCloud Photos”.
  4. We sign in with our Apple account and give Google permission to add our Google Photos photos and videos to iCloud. An important step for the transfer to be completed successfully.

Once permissions have been given, the transfer will begin. And how long will the process take? The time will depend on many factors such as the volume of data or the Internet connection, but once the process begins, we will not have to do anything.

Transferring photos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos has not only become a simple and fast process, but also an efficient process, as the data will be transferred without losing quality, something that could happen if the process was done manually, involving downloads.
