Phil Schiller will ultimately not have an observer seat on OpenAI’s board of directors. After a few days, it has been confirmed that the Apple Fellow will not be part of the board of the company behind the famous chatbot. It was believed that it was going to do so to control the agreement with Apple for its integration with the devices, but it seems that this will not be the case.
Instead of giving you an observer seat on the board of directors, OpenAI is committed to holding regular meetings with Phil Schiller and other investors. Keep in mind that Schiller could have attended board meetings without voting power, and that could be very uncomfortable for Microsoft, for example.
Phil Schiller will not be part of OpenAI’s board
Schiller was going to be part of OpenAI’s board, Bloomberg’s report was correct. However, it seems that things have changed and, in place of that position, regular meetings will be held to control the agreement by which the company’s chatbot will be integrated into Apple devices compatible with Apple Intelligence by the end of the year.
This sudden change appears to be related to antitrust concerns. Both Apple and Microsoft, which has also resigned from its observer seat on OpenAI’s board, are embroiled in trouble within the EU and the United States. Had they entered the board, they would possibly have been investigated.
Both Apple and Microsoft would possibly have been investigated for entering the board with an observer position despite not having the right to vote or participate in decisions. In addition, the original report indicated that Microsoft would have felt uncomfortable with Schiller in meetings if she talked about decisions in which she could be involved.
Both Apple and Microsoft have decided that a possible investigation would not be worthwhile and that, through this new system of regular and informal meetings, the same benefits would be obtained
