SID Display Week 2024 is off to a strong start. We are talking about the largest display fair in the world, and a perfect showcase for manufacturers to show their novelties. And in the case of TCL, it has surprised by presenting the first phone with a triple foldable screen.
TCL is one of the big names in the Smart TV sector, dominating sales in the 98-inch sector thanks to its acclaimed MiniLED displays. But the manufacturer is also growing in the smartphone market, and it seems like that’s just the beginning.
And its new three-zone foldable screen makes it clear that the Chinese firm wants to take another step forward in the foldable phone market and offer an innovative product that can compete head-to-head with other solutions available on the market.
This is TCL’s three-zone foldable phone
We are talking about a panel that can be folded into three zones, and that offers a total screen diagonal of 7.85 inches. So you’re going to be able to use it as a tablet, as well as supporting Z-folds and clamshell folds, so it can be integrated into a phone like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 or Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Best of all, we’re talking about a display that’s been developed entirely by TCL. So, the manufacturer is going to be able to produce its own foldable phones with this panel technology, in addition to selling it to other manufacturers.
Considering that the price is much lower than if you bought panels from other vendors, it’s more than likely that TCL will enter the foldable phone market with its own three-zone foldable model.
Of course, we will have to wait and have a little patience. Obviously, we are talking about a prototype that has been presented at SID Display Week 2024, so we are not talking about an imminent launch. But the fact that TCL has shown off its new folding panel in three zones is a detail to keep in mind.
TCL is possibly improving the manufacturing process, so everything points to the fact that in 2025 or 2026 we will see the first foldable phones from TCL. Or it’s even possible that other manufacturers will launch three-zone foldable phones using this panel. Time by time…
