YouTube is canceling Premium subscriptions obtained through VPNs. Many users chose to subscribe to the platform’s payment method using a VPN, which allowed them to make YouTube believe that they were in another country with cheaper prices, and thus pay less. Such users are being notified by YouTube that their subscription will not be renewed.
Different prices for each country
YouTube Premium prices vary by country. The platform adjusts what it costs to the conditions of the nation, so in certain countries it is extremely cheap compared to others. For example, an individual subscription in $13.99 per month for US subscribers costs €1.95 per month in Argentina ,while in Switzerland it costs $18.35 per month, although it can also be contracted for families of up to 6 members for less.
This is over. YouTube is notifying users who get Premium via VPN by email of the cancellation. You’re not unsubscribing directly, but you’re telling users that it won’t be renewed. This means that when their current cycle ends, they will no longer have access to Premium, as several Reddit users have shown.
At the moment, this measure does not affect all users who obtained it in the same way, and, in principle, varies by country. Despite this, it is foreseeable that over the next few days many subscriptions will be cancelled. At the moment YouTube has not released any official statement.
As for what’s included, YouTube Premium offers all of these:
- Watch videos without ad interruptions
- Download videos for offline viewing
- Play videos in the background
- YouTube Music to stream music without ads
