Apple unveiled the M4 processor at the Let Loose event last May, where it also unveiled the new iPad Pro and iPad Air. However, two months later, the first details of the M5 processor have begun to emerge, a chip that will be in the future iPad Pro and Mac, as well as in the company’s AI servers.
This new M5 processor will be built using more advanced SoIC packaging technology with the aim of creating a strategy with two key points. On the one hand, to power consumer Macs and iPad Pros and, on the other, to use it for their AI-powered servers.
Apple is already working on the M5 processor
This SoIC packaging technology was introduced in 2018 by the company TSMC, which is responsible for manufacturing the processors found inside Apple devices. This technology allows for the stacking of chips in a three-dimensional structure, which in turn allows for better performance and thermal management.
According to the Economic Daily News, specialized in the subject, Apple and TSMC would have extended their agreement for the manufacture of this new processor through the new technology. Manufacturing would begin in 2025 and be used in future Macs and AI servers, as well as future iPad Pros.
Currently, Apple’s servers are believed to be powered with an M2 Ultra for its Secure Enclave. This choice provides power and security, but with the switch to the new M5 processor, both aspects would be improved, also in the devices themselves, such as the iPad Pro and Macs.
Be that as it may, it is normal for this type of rumor to appear. Recently, it was leaked that Apple would even have the M6 planned, so Apple silicon’s roadmap is well marked. This range started in 2020 and it seems that it has a long way to go.
