A new Android security update is available for download today. Google has released this Tuesday the latest security patch, corresponding to the month of June along with the bulletin that includes the vulnerabilities of the operating system fixed over the last few weeks. The June 2024 Android Update is available for download on the latest Google Pixel devices.
One more month, Samsung has managed to get ahead of Google and over the last few days it had already updated some of its models with the June patch. However, it should not be forgotten that manufacturers have access to the patch a few days before Google publishes it in its newsletter, so it is not surprising that some companies manage to get ahead of it.
June Android Update Arrives to Fix Security Issues
This time, we are talking about a Pixel Feature Drop update, which includes new functions and features aimed at improving the experience with Google Pixel series devices. Among the new features included with this update, we find the following:
- Gemini Nano arrives on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a: from now on, users of one of these two models will be able to activate a developer option that allows you to run Google’s language model directly on the device itself.
- Video output via USB: The Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro now support video output via USB, allowing you to stream media to TVs or monitors.
- Auto Framing: Pixel’s camera app is now able to “automatically identify the most photogenic image” when using HDR+, so photos always come out with your face in focus.
- Manual in-camera lens selection: on smartphones with telephoto lenses, you will now be given the option to manually select which camera sensor you want to take a photo with (ultra wide, wide angle or telephoto).
- Quick search for unknown phone numbers: The Phone app now lets you quickly find who owns a phone number from which a call has been received, without having to go to the search engine. This feature is available on Pixel Fold, Pixel 6, and later.
- Accident detection on Pixel Watch 2: The latest version of Google’s smartwatch now also supports the car accident detection feature. In addition, Fall Detection has been improved to be more accurate.
- Improvements in the Google Home app: the new version of Google Home now gives more control from the watch over smart home devices, in addition to allowing access to a new widget from the watch face. Similarly, the Google Home mobile app now includes a favorite devices widget, which allows you to control them from the home screen. Finally, the Pixel Tablet can also display an image of the person knocking on the door thanks to Nest smart doorbells.
On the other hand, the update also focuses on strengthening the security of the operating system, by raising the level of the security patch and introducing solutions to known security gaps.
The security bulletin lists all the vulnerabilities that have been fixed with this update, categorized according to the level of threat they posed to the platform. Some of them are specific improvements in operation and security aimed at Pixel mobiles.
Those who do not want to wait for the arrival of the update on their mobiles, can proceed to manually install the OTA file corresponding to the June patch published by Google.
The June 2024 Android security patch will be released in the next few hours via OTA gradually, and will be rolling out to compatible models gradually.
