TikTok wants to end the competition, to achieve this it has decided to launch applications that imitate other social networks. The first to land is Whee and she wants to put Instagram in her place. Yes, this application that does not yet have a loyal audience seeks to compete against Meta’s photo and video application.
It is not the first time that TikTok has been inspired by what its competition does, TikTok Now was the answer to BeReal. This time, it seems that TikTok wants to change the approach and, to do so, has decided to make Whee a completely independent application.
Whee is TikTok’s proposal to end Instagram’s reign
The launch of Whee has been low-key, ByteDance has released the app without any special events or announcements. In the Google Play Store you can see that it has been launched on June 7, just 11 days ago and where the following description can be read:
Whee is a new social app created to keep you connected with your close friends through life’s spontaneous moments. Capture and share real-life photos that only your friends will be able to see, and be your most authentic self. Whee is the best place for great friends to share important moments in their lives.
What has been written is similar to the experience offered by Instagram or, rather, that it offered in its beginnings. In fact, Whee may want to appeal to this nostalgia on the part of users for having an experience similar to the origins of the Meta application.
Among the main differences in how Instagram works is that it is made to be enjoyed with friends, making it so that only those people you consider your friends can see your photographs, comment and like.
It looks like a version of Instagram intended only for people who want to have an app for their best friends. Driving users away from a global experience in which everyone is part may be their main asset, but it is not enough.
Whee needs what all social networks are looking for: users. This launch has been made in just a dozen countries. Now we just have to wait to see if users bet on a new social network and application that comes from the hand of TikTok.
