A lesson that Xiaomi knows perfectly, since it has been using automation in production processes since 2019, when its smart factory in Yizhuang (Beijing) began operating, which was also responsible for bringing forward the brand’s first foldable phone: the Xiaomi Mix Fold.
Well, now the co-founder of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, who has also been the CEO of the company since 2010, has just announced that his new smart factory in Changping (Beijing) will be operational very soon. He has communicated this through China’s main microblogging social network, Weibo, and also through his official account on X (Twitter), where he attaches a video in which he appears himself presenting it.

Changping’s new Xiaomi Smart Factory has achieved 100% automation of key processes, so it will be able to operate 24 hours a day without human workers supervising the process. In fact, the machines will be able to cooperate with each other and the quality of production will also be controlled by self-developed intelligent machines, not to mention that the factory is able to create a dust-free environment on its own.
Therefore, there is no doubt that the human presence will be minimal and the investment in digitalization has been maximum. According to Lei Jun himself, the new factory has an area of 81,000 square meters and has a total investment of 2,400 million yuan. To give you an idea of the dimensions of the matter, this would be about 329 million dollars or 305 million euros with currency conversion.
Xiaomi has been focusing on smart manufacturing since 2017, although it wasn’t until 2019, as we said before, that they built their first lab-level smart factory in Yizhuang. At that time, it was capable of producing around one million smartphones a year, a more than notable difference from the smart factory that plans to land imminently, which promises to manufacture one unit of mobile phone per second.
This factory has been certified as a national benchmark smart manufacturing enterprise in China, and therefore the new Xiaomi Smart Factory in Changping has an annual production capacity of 10 million flagships. In addition, the company has taken the moment to announce that its next generation of foldables has been created there, consisting of the already leaked Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 and its first clamshell foldable: the Xiaomi MIX Flip, revealing in its promotional poster that they will be launched this month.
