This is not the first time that Leica has shown interest in the smartphone sector. The prestigious German company has collaborated with HUAWEI and, currently, with Xiaomi. The result of the alliance can be seen first-hand in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, being one of the benchmarks at the photographic level on Android. Of course, it seems that Leica wants to offer part of its essence to other users and, now, it has launched an application. Leica LUX lands on iOS and promises to offer the iconic look of these coveted cameras.

Leica wants iPhone users to get similar results to users of Android phones that bear its signature. Leica LUX offers a number of features ranging from different lenses to styles or, rather, film simulations in the pure style of what Fujifilm does in its cameras. The goal is clear: to convince users that they have a Leica camera in their hands, even if it’s an iPhone.

The app offers several classic Leica lenses such as the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2, the Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 and the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4. All these lenses can be used from the application and without limitations, offering the possibility for users to select the lens they want to use at any time.

While it’s difficult to replicate the behavior of an analog lens on a mobile device, Leica says it has done its best to capture the essence of these lenses and bring it to its new iOS app.

In the case of the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2, it seems that it has been achieved really well because the blur is practically identical to that offered by this device. Logically, this can only be differentiated by the most experienced users in photography and, in fact, the most interesting for the general public are the film simulations.

The vast majority of Leica cameras that have used these lenses are analog, Leica knows this and that is why it offers different styles within Leica LUX. These styles or looks are nothing more than analog film simulations in most cases, although they also offer their own version of classic styles.

It is interesting to see how classic photography companies are committed to trying to offer their own experience of their cameras on smartphones. Leica LUX can be downloaded from today on the Apple App Store. It’s free, although it will feature one-time in-app purchases.
