Emoticons have become a form of communication in itself and, for this reason, over the last few years, we have been telling you how you can change emojis on Android and even what is the meaning of the most popular emoticons on WhatsApp, the most used instant messaging application in the world.

But since new emojis keep arriving on our mobile device, surely at some point you have had doubts about the meaning of one of them. Well, don’t worry, because you’re not alone, as a recent study has just revealed which emojis generate the most confusion in 2024.

These are the three most confusing emojis of 2024

On the day we celebrate International Emoji Day, Preply, a language learning marketplace that connects tutors with hundreds of thousands of students in 180 countries, has just published a report revealing which are the 3 most confusing emoticons for users during 2024.

To carry out this study, Preply took the most confusing emojis of 2023 as a basis and asked 2,021 people in the United States what they think their meaning is.

Thus, according to the report, the most confusing emoticons this year are those of the “finger with nail polish”, 💅 the “cloud of smoke” 💨 and the “upside-down face”. 🙃

In addition, of these three, the first of them, the “finger with the nail polish”, 💅 is the one that generates the most confusion, since, while 40% of those surveyed use this emoji to indicate elegance, for the rest it has other totally different meanings such as “get a manicure”, “don’t take me seriously” or “dedicate yourself to self-care”.

Likewise, this study also reveals that the emoticon that users use the most to indicate things different from those of their original meaning is that of the “persevering face”, 😣 since only 5% of people use this emoji correctly and most of us use it to indicate frustration.

This emoticon is closely followed in the ranking of emojis that we do not use precisely by the “fearful face” 😨 and, again, by the “finger with nail polish”. 💅
